SRA Authorisation of Firms Rules, rule 8

COLP and COFA

Every SRA-authorised firm must at all times have a COLP and a COFA whose designations the SRA has approved. Each must be a manager or employee, and a COLP must be authorised to carry on reserved legal activities. Today's rules let one person hold both; new limits for firms over £600,000 turnover or £2m client money were approved and then paused on 1 October 2026. Tell us what you need and Joe will talk it through.

What you need

What do you need?

Optional. Please leave out client names and anything confidential.

  • Free, and no obligation
  • Read and answered by Joe himself, never passed to a firm or a list
  • Information only: no legal, regulatory or tax advice

The process

  • Step 1 Tell us what you need and how to reach you. About a minute, no account.
  • Step 2 Joe reads it himself and replies directly. Nobody else receives it.
  • Step 3 You get a short call to talk it through. Go ahead with something, ask more, or do nothing.

This is a free information site. When you send an enquiry, Joe, who runs this site, reads it and replies to you himself; no firm receives your details and you pay nothing to ask. It carries no advertising, no sponsored placement and no affiliate links, and no provider in the table has paid to be there. Every rule is quoted from the SRA's own text with a link, and every price is read from the provider's own page on the date shown. We are not the SRA, and nothing here is legal or regulatory advice; check the source before you rely on it.

Every provider below was read on its own page through our fetch box, and the row says what that page published on the day we read it. 4 of 24 publish a figure; the rest are listed too, because how many will not quote a number is the most useful thing about this market. Nothing here is a quote for your job: it is what other people advertise.

Every row is a verbatim sentence read from the named source's own page through our fetch service on the date shown, hash-pinned to the stored read (the sha of the page's visible text; the raw page is mirrored to R2). 4 of the 24 named sources that could be read published a usable figure; 20 published none and are recorded as not published, never filled in; 2 could not be read (blocked, dead or unreachable) and count nowhere. The headline figures (median, minimum, maximum, quartiles) are over ONE figure per source in GBP (a source's median where its page yielded several accepted sentences), so N counts sources, never sentences; 38 candidate sentence(s) were refused by a reviewer with the reason recorded. The fuller derivation this dataset is chartered to grow into (not yet what the figures above are; they are each source's own published figure as read): the published price per offer type across providers: support subscriptions (e.g. from £950 + VAT a year for a sole practitioner), one-day and online COLP/COFA courses (low, median, high per format), and the share of outsourcing providers that publish a fee against those that quote; the count of providers per offer type

Straight answers

What are a COLP and a COFA?

The Compliance Officer for Legal Practice and the Compliance Officer for Finance and Administration. Every SRA-authorised firm must have both, approved by the SRA. (SRA Authorisation of Firms Rules, rules 8 and 13)

Can the COLP and COFA be the same person?

Under the rules in force, yes: rule 8 requires an approved individual in each role, not two people. The paused 2026 rules would bar some managers in firms over £600,000 turnover or £2m client money. (SRA Authorisation of Firms Rules, rules 8 and 13)

What are the COLP and COFA changes?

New rules 8.4 to 8.7 would stop managers who direct the firm holding the roles above the thresholds. They were approved for a phased start from January 2027 and paused on 1 October 2026. (Legal Futures: SRA announces pause to compliance officer rule changes (1 October 2026))

Does the SRA charge to approve a COLP or COFA?

No. The SRA says there is no fee for the application, and the nominated officer cannot start until approved. (SRA: approval of a COLP or COFA)

Who sells COLP and COFA support and training, and at what published price?

The median published figure is £855. The middle half of the readings sit between £316 and £950 and the whole spread runs £168 to £950, over 4 figures read on 2026-10-28. A spread that wide is the honest answer: what you pay depends on the scope, so the table below shows every reading and who published it. (Colp Cofa Support Price Index: every row, with its source)

How many providers publish a price at all?

4 of the 24 read, out of 26 named. The others answer with a quote form. They are listed in the table as publishing no price rather than dropped, because the share of a market that will not put a number on its own page is itself a finding. (Colp Cofa Support Price Index: every row, with its source)

Where do these figures come from, and when were they read?

Each one is a sentence on the provider's own page, read on 2026-10-28 through our own fetch box and stored with the hash of the page's text, so the row can be checked against what was there that day. The row links to the page it came from. (Colp Cofa Support Price Index: every row, with its source)

Is this a price for my job?

No. Every figure here is what a provider advertises on its own page for its own packages, not a quote for your work, and the spread from £168 to £950 is exactly why. Scope is what moves it. Ask for a price and you get one; this page is so you know what you are hearing when you do. (Colp Cofa Support Price Index: every row, with its source)

Who answers an enquiry from this page?

Joe, who runs this site, reads every enquiry himself and replies directly. No firm receives your details. He gives information and a free call, never legal or regulatory advice.
